EP Review: Omer Netzer – Omer

The new collection of tracks showcases the depth and range of the Nashville based alt-country artist

Over the last few years, Omer Netzer has been building up a swell of momentum as an artist who blends alt-country, blues and Americana in a way that seems to pay homage to the sound and authenticity of artists like Johnny Cash while putting his own distinctive slant on the genre, the artist’s new EP Omer is a rousing collection of tracks that are packed full of emotional depth, grit and an abundance of heart.

The EP opens with the personality filled ‘Mr. Know It All’, a track that captures the feel and atmosphere of the artist’s sound with a little old timey radio intro that matches the tone perfectly. The track itself has all of the hallmarks of a great country song, vocals that are packed full of soul that sing relatable lyrics against a backdrop that feels as creative and thoughtful as it is nostalgic, setting us off on the perfect footing.

The artist’s breakout radio hit ‘Midnight Blue’ follows, a track that is steeped in emotion and a raw, atmospheric tension that brings out the most sincere and powerful side of his sound. Lyrics about hardship and struggle in a relationship are accentuated by the impactful nature of the sound, with his lyrical imagery and the concept of being turned “midnight blue” making for a vivid picture painted by the artist.

The artist’s most reflective and poignant side comes to the fore on ‘Know This Place No More’, a track about the changing times and the way that the communities and staples of our childhoods change over time as the times move on and businesses go under. There is a really moving tone to the track and it makes for some resonating moments, offering a relatable listening experience for anybody who has felt like the world is passing them by and the way things used to be are fading before their eyes.

The artist’s reflective tendencies continue into ‘A Father’s Love’, a track that sees his attention turning to familial ties and the people that we love in similarly compelling fashion. The way that Omer pours his soul out on the track as he looks back through memories and different scenarios makes for a powerful listen, and one that continues to highlight the strength of Omer’s writing and his ability to conjure emotion through his sound.

Things pick up both tonally and stylistically on ‘Promise Land’, a track that details the artists excitement about trying to make a go of living the rock and roll lifestyle as an artist and the promises and dreams that come with it. The aspirational and fiery nature of the sound makes for an instantly uplifting listening experience, and the way that the artist delves into the daring and unpredictable nature of the journey is matched expertly by the track’s high octane feel.

The EP closes with ‘Low High’, the second previously released track that delves into the push and pull and excitement of a relationship between two people with contrasting personalities, and how they make it work in spite of their differences. The contrasts make for a really fun and explosive dynamic that makes for a jaunty and adrenaline-packed listening experience that never relents throughout its duration.

The collection of tracks as a whole does a great job of delving into the full spectrum of emotions and moods that Omer is capable of stirring through his sound, from the more euphoric and energetic rock and roll anthems to more mellow, folk-influenced moments of introspection and sombre thoughtfulness, the EP manages to traverse all of it while holding onto the distinctive feel and appeal that gives the artist his own unique flavour in modern music.
