The track follows the release of his excellent recent single ‘last red light’
An emotional new breakup single for anybody who has seen themselves shift into the background of somebody they are about’s life, latest teo tala single ‘understudy’ continues to showcase the rising young artists penchant for crafting resonating and heartfelt sounds that strike a chord with listeners and have a real level of vulnerability and honesty to them.
As always, the artist’s vibrant brand of bedroom pop adds a bit of a unique flair and sense of energy and personality to proceedings, and the narrative does a great job of feeling both intimate and personal while having a universal, wide-reaching relatability that cuts through the upbeat sound and makes for a captivating, multi-faceted listening experience. teo tala has been consistently establishing himself as someone with a sound that feels polished while being saturated full of emotional and authentic truths, and this is just the latest showcase of his immersive appeal as an artist.
“For a huge chunk of my life, I’ve been heavily influenced by musicals and movies, so it felt very natural for me to process heartbreak through that lens. With that narrative in mind, I specifically wrote ‘understudy’ about that post-breakup moment when you realize you are no longer the lead in someone else’s story,” says tala. “The song captures that unfortunate and regrettable feeling of watching that person, who used to be your everything, move on without you while you’re still stuck replaying the old scenes in your head and searching for how things could’ve gone differently.”
