Album Review: Tangerine Cassette – CRASH OUT

Tangerine Cassette build upon their wildly chaotic and distinctive brand of intense, personality-filled alternative pop on new album CRASH OUT

A lauded independent duo who’s distinctive and character-filled alternative pop sound has seen them winning over mountains of acclaim and millions of steams, Tangerine Cassette, the chaotic project of Natalie Cleveland and Josh Roach, have taken their stylish appeal to new heights with the release of their new album CRASH OUT.

The release opens with their new single and the albums title track ‘CRASH OUT’, a fiery, guitar-driven track that sees them flexing their alternative rock tendencies as they vent about their everyday frustrations and the inner turmoil and heartache that is truly causes beneath the surface. It is a track that is layered full of depth and creativity, and perfectly sets the tone for a wild ride of an album.

The unapologetic, uncompromising and exhilarating ‘TOLD YOU SO’ follows, a track that continues to showcase their relentlessly upbeat and energetic appeal alongside a soundscape of heavy bass, 808s and forthright, brash lyrics that express a real sense of glee and smugness about the feeling of seeing something coming before anybody else and getting to say those three satisfying words.

There is a more atmospheric and dark feel to ‘ROLL THE CREDITS’, a breakup single that finds the duo in a more restrained space, while still threatening to spill over into chaos at any minute. The track is a rallying cry for anybody who has been blinded by red flags and is finally seeing the light with a renewed sense of clarity, and it makes for another wildly ambitious and personality-fuelled release.

We delve further into breakup territory on ‘EXclusive club’, a track that finds you in the aftermath of the fall out and feeling more confident and unhinged than ever. The dancey nature of the sound and bratty, unbothered nature of the lyrics makes for an instant anthem for anybody who wants to celebrate feeling themselves and living their best life, and it is does so with no care for the opinions or judgments of anybody else.

Diving into the mindset of the “stalker ex” and offering a full, unhinged role reversal, ‘HEY LITTLE BABY’ is a track that looks to turn the tables on all of those who look to manipulate and intimidate others in order to stay a part of their lives or keep them from getting away. Their sound really didn’t take much tweaking in order to turn from chaotically fun to chaotically psychotic, and it is another showcase of their mastery of their atmospheric and hard-hitting appeal.

‘GIBBERISH’ is a track that feels sure to resonate with listeners thanks to its more grounded and relatable appeal, looking to provide a bit of escapism from issues like money problems and relationship and friendship issues to instead just enjoy yourself and embrace your life, for even a fleeting night or moment. The hypnotic nature of the soundscape and the fire in the vocals does a great job of providing an upbeat distraction, and its swirling, intoxicating appeal feels impossible to not get swept up in.

The intensity is again ramped up on ‘GIMME MORE’, a track that has an insatiable and uncompromising sense of drive, wading through a murky, atmospheric soundscape to carve out a narrative of ambition, revenge and an unwillingness to settle for anything less than you came for.

‘HELLO ITS THE NEW ME’ is a track about breaking cycles and being able to free yourself from the shackles that have tied you down in the past, whatever, or whoever they are. There is a swagger to the vocals and instrumental throughout the track, and it builds in a way that sweeps you up and drags you along this journey of self-discovery and re-birth with them in resonating and cathartic fashion.

Initially starting out as one of the more restrained and conventionally poppy tracks on the album, ‘FLIP IT BACK AGAIN’ is a release built upon the sense of personality and infectious allure that the duo so easily command, before diving into more exploratory and adventurous territory through a soundscape that continues to shift and expand. The track was created around the idea of embracing second chances and making the most of them, and the way that this track transforms over time really doubles down on that idea.

A track that feels tailor made for dance floors, get togethers, and anything that involves drinking and letting go of your inhibitions, ‘BBE (BIG BOOTY ENERGY)’ is an empowering and fierce new release for anybody that exudes the kind of vibes that allow you to command a room, utilising their dynamic and expansive sound to create a vibrant and attention-grabbing release that feels instantly compelling.

The album closes out with ‘I AM EVERYTHING’, a track that feels like it encapsulates the themes of the album in a way that feels exciting and commanding throughout. Throughout the album, the duo explore themes like confidence, renewal, finding your spark, and living your life to the fullest with no exceptions, and this track puts a bow on these ideas and sums them up with the message that you are limitless, capable of anything and everything and able to clear any obstacles and pitfalls out of your way.
