We had a chat with Maria Lane about the atmospheric and stirring new halloween version of ‘carrie white’
After falling in love with the artist’s atmospheric, horror-themed single ‘carrie white’ last year, we were thrilled and intrigued to find out that Maria Lane was releasing a new version of the track that leans even more into its spookier and more intense elements in the form of ‘carrie white (halloween version)’.
The exciting new take on the track is the perfect soundtrack to this time of the year, with unique production elements like screams and voices in the background just adding to the sense of occasion and unique tone of the track, and the poignant message of the tragic titular character and her plight making for engrossing and captivating listening. Following such a release, we had a chat with Maria to find out some more about the new version of the release and what inspired it, and what else the artist has planned for the near future.
Hey! We love your new release ‘Carrie White (Halloween Version)’—what more can you tell us about it?
Thank you! It was produced by Justin Meyer and me. We wanted the production to be a little more chaotic with lots of theremin to give it that eerie Halloween vibe. After releasing the original version last year, we decided to create a special version this year, specifically for Halloween party playlists, so we added screams, extra sound effects, and some surprises for a darker, spookier feel.
What was the process like putting it together?
We didn’t redo any of the vocals, but we added an electric guitar part, which I think is so cool! It’s actually a nod to Carrie: The Musical and adds another layer to the track. We also threw in a little surprise at the end to keep listeners on their toes!
What were your biggest influences when making this new version of the track?
I was still inspired by Olivia Rodrigo’s Vampire, but I also played my producer, Justin, the opening track “In” from the musical Carrie. That’s where we drew inspiration for the guitar parts—it just felt like the right fit.
What can you tell us about your upcoming role as Carrie in the upcoming musical?
Carrie White is such a complex character—an outcast who’s bullied both at home and by her peers. She’s a girl with dreams who just wants to belong. We open on Friday, November 1, and honestly, this is a dream come true. I’ve felt a connection to Carrie for years; in a way, she brings me back to a younger version of myself, when I struggled to fit in at school. This role is also the most emotionally and vocally demanding I’ve ever taken on, and it’s been an incredible challenge to push myself to new limits.
We’re setting the production in a church, which really amplifies the story’s themes of guilt, innocence, and redemption. The incredible directors, my dear friends Annalys Ramirez and Angel R Tavarez, have set a beautiful vision for the show that brings out the raw intensity of Carrie’s journey. I feel incredibly lucky and excited to bring this role to life—it’s been a dream of mine for a decade, and I can’t wait to share it with everyone.
What else do you have planned for the near future?
I’m working on more music! I’m planning the next album, with some new things lined up for the new year. And there may be more from the Black and Blue universe too—stay tuned!
