This week, our partnership with CloseUp has taken us all of the way out to The Deep Blue.
With just one release under their collective belt so far, Manchester-based indie-folk outfit The Deep Blue have began making waves following the release of their debut single ‘Jealous Sea’. Georgia Gage, Niamh Feeney, Katie Emmanuel and Sophie Wozencraft have crafted a sound that feels rich in life and depth, with vocal harmonies and melodies bouncing around their flowing and soothing sound in a way that feels remarkably natural and authentic.
With three of the four members previously known as Café Spice, the outfit decided to go into a different direction, feeling like they had grown apart from their old sound and name. Just one single in, The Deep Blue feels like an exciting project that is sure to provide us with a plethora of rousing and fresh sounds from artists who have really discovered where they want their sound to go. With such an encouraging introduction and the unrestricted return of live music seemingly just around the corner, this feels like an exciting time to find yourself discovering The Deep Blue, and meeting a potential break-out act right at the beginning. We had a chat with The Deep Blue to find out some more about the emerging outfit.
Guys! It’s great to sit down and have a proper chat (Kinda). We’re such big fans of your music as you well know. Tell everyone a bit about the musical world of The Deep Blue?
Hello and thank you! We are an all female indie-folk band based in Manchester. This city is our shared home but we’re from all corners of the nation; Georgia is from Scotland, Sophie from Wales, Niamh from Ireland and Katie from Down South (official term). Our world is built on Sophie’s fabulous cooking and hours spent jamming tunes, coming up with crunchy harmonies and stumbling across cool riffs in our tiny rehearsal room on the top floor. Our little heaven.
The last 12 months has been such a crazy year for musicians & artists, how much has it had an impact on your music?
Well The Deep Blue actually formed in the Summer of 2020 so you could say we have been forged in the thankless flames of lockdown. Three of us came from another band and when Katie joined, The Deep Blue was born. The time and space of lockdown has actually been really great for our songwriting. We bounce files back and forth, each adding our ideas until we’ve crafted something we love. Then we take it to Alex Quinn (our producer) who responds with ‘Yup. Some of that. Some of this’ et voila, we have a song.
We for one are absolutely missing live shows and festivals more than ever thought. if you were to create a ‘Deep Blue Festival’ (really good name that, we may steal it for future CloseUp events) then WHO would be your 3 headliners? (and can we come?)
Good question. Tricky with 4 of us, we have varying tastes….I think we could definitely all agree that HAIM would be there front and centre. Do you think we could have a kind of Big Thief/Phoebe Bridgers collab act? That would be mind blowing (and tear-inducing). Finally, if we could pick anyone we couldn’t not pick Beyoncé.
So yeah. Let us know when you want to start planning.
What are your plans for 2021, fill us in with all the info you can!
Write, record, release and finally play some live shows! We’re hungry to perform and we’ve got so many songs we want to release. We’ll let you in on a little secret: ‘Jealous Sea’ is the first of four tracks recorded with Alex Quinn….keep your eyes peeled and your ears tuned.
If you were selling yourself to potential new fans, how would you describe the band in 4 words?
Fresh Summer emotion sounds.
