We had a chat with fiercely cutting edge UK outfit The Post Romantics as they release their debut EP eden
Often described as dark, unsettling and alarmingly cutting edge, Liverpool outfit The Post Romantics are an outfit that have carved out a fierce reputation for themselves for their brand of grungy, R&B influenced, dark pop.
Today the outfit have released their debut EP eden into the world and the body of work represents the perfect summation of their meticulous and often sinister sound. Our partnership with our good friends at CloseUp has bought us to the door of one of the UK music scene’s most enigmatic wildcards, and we found out some more about the act as they release their most accomplished work to date.
The Post Romantics! It’s great to have a chat. We love your music as you well know. Tell us a bit more about the world of TPR?
Well, we love you too, thanks for having us. The band is myself, my two baby brothers and my best mate from school. We never really fit in in the music scene where we’re from, so we wanted to do something a lil’ bit different. Kinda like emo meets R&B. We just write about things that happen in our lives, from being manipulated in love to sleeping with people you shouldn’t have. Sort of imagine if Shakespeare had Tinder…
What part of the musical process do you enjoy most, and why? is it performing live, creating your tracks, or..?
We’re definitely a live band, we love being on stage and getting in peoples faces. Being able to connect with people through music is what makes this whole industry so exciting. We love writing though too, we very much use writing sessions as ‘band therapy’. It’s a nice catharsis.
The last 18 months and the pandemic have been crazy for musicians, how much has it had an effect on your music?
It affected us massively – our first headline tour got cancelled, studios closed. It sucked. We had to learn to do everything on our own – we wrote, recorded, mixed and mastered this whole EP ourselves. It took a long time but it was kinda nice to do things our way. As shitty as the last year was, it really gave us the chance to reflect on ourselves. We realised that we weren’t really happy and we got to figure out what was getting in the way of that and then turn that into a record.
If you could create a ‘Post Romantics Festival’, which 3 artists would you have headlining? (Fri, Sat, Sun)
The Weeknd, Paramore, Massive Attack
Your new and debut EP is out now, tell us more about it, and what’s its like to have a body of work finally out?
We wrote this record in an attempt to find our own paradise, a sorta figurative ‘Garden of Eden’. We realised that we let so much shit get in our way. We’re self destructive and we let people bring us down and basically we just need to be nicer to ourselves. Talking about all of those things helped, I think… But god, it feels so good to have it out now. It’s been a long time coming but there’s no stopping us now.
