Following the release of his captivating and thoughtful debut single ‘All I Do’, we had a chat with emerging UK artist Ben Murphy.
On his rousing debut single ‘All I Do’, emerging London artist Ben Murphy has done a really rousing job of establishing his gorgeously poised, personality-filled brand of folk-tinged indie pop. The stripped-back nature of the sound does a great job of allowing the artist’s poignant, storytelling lyrics and immersive vocals to shine, earmarking the talent as someone capable of capturing your attention and seemingly never letting go.
Narratively, the track provides a candid look at some of the more mundane, day to day aspects of a relationship, and highlights how sometimes the small things can be the most important. The significance and beauty of these small, fleeting moments is captured effortlessly on the track, and the candid nature and charm of Ben’s sound feels like a breath of fresh air throughout. We have singled out Ben Murphy as a real potential talent, and caught up with the artist to find out some more about the man behind it and his thoughtful sound.
Who TF is Ben Murphy?
I’m an artist/songwriter/producer from north-west London, I love my three dogs, and Guinness.
How long have you been making music?
I’ve started playing drums when I was 5, I picked up guitar and piano later in life. I started writing lyrics when I was ten even though it was terribly misspelt, and still is.
Why do you make music?
I make music to help me vent moments that hopefully people will relate to or just enjoy listening to .
The best part of writing is the moment a song finally clicks, especially when writing with someone else.
What are your biggest influences?
Experiences I’ve had as well as musicians like Sam Fender, Lewis Capaldi and Holly Humberstone.
What would you say has been your best moment so far?
Having friends and family singing my songs with me at gigs and some strangers joining in too.
How would you describe your sound to somebody unfamiliar with it?
Although I find it hard to describe my sound, I would say lyrics are my focus, either a band setting or in a ballad but to put it in a genre it’s indie rock/alternative Pop.
What’s your dream “I’ve made it” moment?
Having a whole crowd singing my song to me whilst having a nice time at the gig and hopefully wanting to come back.
We love your new single ‘All I Do’, what more can you tell us about it?
‘All I do’ was written about the mundane moments in a relationship that you miss when I over. The opening line ‘cigarettes and morning sex’ was given to me by a friend about their partner, who they unfortunately ended things the night I wrote it and so the song took on a whole new perspective.
What else do you have planned for the near future?
Hopefully more gigs, more songs and meeting some lovely people along the way.
And finally, who is your biggest fan right now?
Not to sound too successful but it’s my mum or my girlfriend.
