We found out some more about Melbourne duo Dreaming Soda following the release of their lush, nostalgia-driven new single ‘Jake’
With the release of their nostalgic second single ‘Jake’, Melbourne duo Dreaming Soda continue to establish their distinctive, dreamy brand of lush, warm bedroom pop, marking the pair as an outfit to look out for in the process.
The duo have found a niche by candidly writing about childhood experiences and memories in a manner that manages to feel both personal and universal. From the nostalgic lyrics, to the authentic, lived in lyrics and storytelling, to the cute little sonic touches and unique moments that permeate the sound, Dreaming Soda feel unlike anything else, and their sound is packed full of an innocence and infectious, affable charisma that makes for a truly enjoyable listening experience. Still in the projects infancy, we had a chat with Dreaming Soda to find out some more about it and what plans they have for the future.
Who TF are Dreaming Soda?
Dreaming Soda is zellennial nostalgic escapism packaged in retro synth-pop. It’s a project designed to pay homage to the generation who knew what life was like pre-internet, but are now also dealing with TikTok addiction. We are two gals from Melbourne Australia here to make genuinely happy and wholesome music about childhood memories.
How long have you been making music?
About 6 years, this project is a new direction for frontwoman Ella who has an established project ‘Bares’.
Why do you make music?
It’s a great way to have a stable career and save for a mortgage. Jk, I dunno, maybe we’re masochists?
What are your biggest influences?
Retro video games with really fucked up chords that are shockingly creative and interesting. Kandinski. Studio Ghibli. Any fuzz pedal. In terms of music, Superorganism are a big influence for us.
What would you say has been your best moment so far?
Landing two support slots before releasing our first single! That was such a vouch of confidence for us, and proves that people are super excited about what’s to come.
How would you describe your sound to somebody unfamiliar with it?
“Chaos-pop for the Existential Pokemon Trainer” has been the best way to explain what we have going on here. It’s glittery, feel-good, and very very catchy. You’ll be singing along to our bubblegum tunes before you can say Mario Kart
What’s your dream “I’ve made it” moment?
Playing at an international festival for sure! Free flights and accommodation? Doesn’t get better than that. It would also be incredible to collaborate with an artist like St. Vincent or Jack Antonoff and make something super weird.
We love your initial releases ‘Caramel’ and ‘Jake’, what more can you tell us about it?
Caramel is the first chapter of the project, and details the experience of baking cookies, and falling down the vortex of time as you discover a misunderstanding around how passing time works. Jake is about winning vicariously through watching your older brother play video games. These are both songs that outline a specific memory of my (Ella’s) childhood and immortalises the wholesome moment forever.
What else do you have planned for the near future?
The Dreaming Soda EP is set for release at the end of July, and will be accompanied by (wait for it) a mother fucking COMIC BOOK!!!!!!!!! After that will be world domination
And finally, who is your biggest fan right now?
Not the cat, she is sick of the rehearsals.
