Who TF is Jayd?

We had a chat with emerging indie pop talent Jayd following the release of her infectious new single ‘LUCID LOVER’

Being a British artist based in France and Luxembourg, rising indie pop artist Courtney Jayd Lumsden, better known as Jayd, is someone who can offer a unique approach to songwriting and crafting her sounds thanks to the range of cultures she inhabits. Initially producing more straight-laced pop, the last few years have seen the artist pivot into more alternative and indie pop sounds, and provided more of an avenue for the artist to showcase the uniqueness and charm of her sound.

On her latest release ‘LUCID LOVER’, the artist continues to explore her sound with the use of lush, layered textures and harmonies and infectious melodies. There is a delicate balance found on the track that allows it to both feel immaculately polished while maintaining a real sense of authenticity and rawness, something that is only extenuated by an seamless verse from UK artist Mirari More. The track is the latest piece of evidence that this new era of Jayd has the makings of something special, and that makes this the perfect time to get to know the artist a little better.

Who TF is Jayd?

A singer-songwriter from the North-West. Currently living in France working in Luxembourg, loving the French way of life but still enjoys a gAd cuppa tayyyy! 😉

How long have you been making music?

I’ve been writing and composing since the age of 16, but learning about recording/producing for the past 7/8 years, in my home studio.

Why do you make music?

Music distracts me, so sometimes when something scary/sad is going on in the world or in my personal life I tend to turn to music. It helps me with my emotions. After composing I feel like a whole weight has been lifted, kind of link when you have a good cry.

What are your biggest influences?

Red Hot Chilli Peppers, COLDPLAY, TAYLOR SWIFT, RADIOHEAD, MOBY, JEREMY ZUCKER, LANY.

What would you say has been your best moment so far?

Meeting my producer Jeremy, I’ve been trying for years to create a specific sound! I can’t always describe what I want with words so I have to use sound effects and random words that don’t always make sense, and he just gets me. I’m pretty critical of my own work so finding Jeremy has just been the breath of fresh air I’ve been looking for.

How would you describe your sound to somebody unfamiliar with it?

Spacey … that’s a word I use all the time with my producer haha…. Like life, it doesn’t have a definite structure, it’s just what I feel in the moment.
Indie pop/ dream pop maybe?

What’s your dream “I’ve made it” moment?

Hearing a song of mine accompany a perfect scene in a touching series on Netflix. I say that because when I write a song I almost always have a scene played out in my head it always helps me complete the lyrics. That’s why my main goal would be to have my music complete a film scene.

We love your release ‘LUCID LOVER’, what more can you tell us about it?

I wrote this song a few years back. It’s about not being able to have the kind of partner someone may want. It’s about not being transparent, being unclear, not completely honest — the opposite of Lucid.
I met the rapper Mirari More completely randomly, we met in 2017 on Christmas Eve. He broke down outside of my childhood home and my dad invited him in whilst he waited for the AA. We got talking and the rest is history.

What else do you have planned for the near future?

An EP and brand new music coming out very soon, including the music video for Lucid Lover.

And finally, who is your biggest fan right now?

My cat. She almost always comes over and meows when I sing, I have videos if ever you were interested XD …. After my cat though I’d say a French girl I teach English to. She is always sharing my videos and music, it’s really cute. So yeah, thanks for the shares Lucie!
