The artist continues to beguile us with her captivating songwriting.
Cornwall singer-songwriter Bailey Tomkinson has been on something of a steady ascent since her emergence back in 2018, culminating with her first US show at the end of last year, taking place at New York’s Rockwood Music Hall.
The end of the year also saw the artist release her gorgeous new single ‘Astronaut’, a wonderfully crafted but sombre release about a love that feels just about out of reach. The aching, longing nature of the song is poignantly captured by the artist’s intricate, emotionally charged vocals and the warm, almost sepia-tinted instrumentation. Bailey is an artist that seems to be constantly coming into her own as a songwriter, possessing a tone and style that feels intrinsically her own, effortlessly engaging and capable of conjuring emotion from the most hardened of listeners.
“Astronaut is a song about unrequited love, always lurking on the outside but never having the courage to do anything about it,” says Bailey. “In a weird way the character Joe from the Netflix show “YOU” was a bit of a catalyst for the song, especially the line ‘I’m an astronaut floating in your space’. Close enough to touch, but will remain watching and never doing anything with that feeling. I think we’ve all liked someone before and never done anything about it, I was hoping to capture that feeling in this song.”
