Following the success of debut Bel Kil single ‘Escaping’, a track that did a wonderful job of establishing the artist’s lush indie pop sound and distinctive sense of charisma and charm, the Melbourne-based upstart has followed it up with her second release ‘Backup Plan’.

The track continues to expand upon the sonic world that she has created, this time showcasing a wonderfully slowed down and contemplative sound. There is a searingly ambitious, more dreamy, psychedelic feel to the new release, with an increased focus on the tone and feel of the sound throughout. Themes of disappointment and being let down pop up throughout the track’s lyrics, and as it grows more chaotic and cathartic, the track takes on an all-encompassing, anthemic feel that just heightens throughout. The track is another rousing example of what this artist is capable of, and with her debut EP My Year just around the corner, who knows what the artist still has in store.

“I was a lot more focused on guitar and bass tones with this track than in the past.” Bel Kil says of the track. “It was nice to take a step away from producing more electronic songs in Ableton and go back to how I used to write with a guitar before I knew how to produce. I wanted to capture a slower, contemplative, dreamy and slightly psychedelic feel. I started with the guitar chords and built the production around there, using midi drums originally and my guitar as the bass. I added virtual strings, synths and layers of vocals. I played around with panning and effects. I worked backwards producing the whole track in the box and then overdubbed my friends Tristan Courtney on bass guitar and John Vassallo on drums to achieve more of a ‘live feeling’.”
