Nashville alt-pop star BETTY REED has grown into a revered name over the last few years thanks to her thoughtful approach to songwriting and engaging, memorable sound. Tracks like ‘Drunk On You’ and ‘Never Enough’ preceded the release of her well-received 2021 EP Mistakes Made, Lessons Learned, and the artist has continued to establish and expand upon her sound ever since.

Her immersive new single ‘Shallow End’, sees the artist thoughtfully articulate her battle with depression and the complexities and things that other people may not be able to see or understand about it. The metaphor of drowning in the shallow end paints a powerful image about the unique challenges that are faced in such a situation, and the artist’s fierce and rousing sound adds to this feeling of perseverance and determination that has be present in order to battle against yourself in these situations. The track serves as a message of resilience to people in a similar situation, and as to a sign that their struggles are seen and felt by others, capturing the artist’s experiences in a powerful and vivid fashion.

“‘Shallow End’ is about the complex and conflicting emotions I experience when in the throes of depression.” BETTY REED says of the track. “When depression sets in, it’s not like I’m in the deep end of a pool struggling to not drown. It’s more like this feeling that I’m floundering in the shallow end and there is an easy way to rescue myself. I merely have to stand up. But it’s hard to do even that when your brain is malfunctioning.”
