The track continues the ushering in of a new era for the artist
“I think it’s about having the confidence to be myself, the confidence to simplify things, to strip back where I would have added more, to be more direct.”
These are the words of singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Charles Watson in the lead up to the release of his second full-length album YES, and judging from the new single ‘Figure Skater’, as well as its predecessor ‘Afghan Hound’, this idea is already paying dividends.
Both the sound and the track’s video are dripping with personality and have a real candid and real feel to them. From Charles’ effortless sense of humour that is showcased in the video to the more sparse and simplistic nature of the songwriting, it is a package that bleeds with authenticity and heart. This new era almost of Charles Watson seems to represent a lifting of the mask that he’s often worn whether as part of a band or on his debut album, now laying his insecurities bare and showcasing his distinctive, raw talent front and center , ‘Figure Skater’ is the work of an artist with nowhere to left hide, and reveling in it.
