There probably aren’t many words that could be used to describe Phil Danyew’s indie rock project Elephant Castle that we haven’t used already on this site. Fun, creative, and armed with an endlessly catchy sound that feels ready for big arenas and daytime TV slots, the artist has had one of the more stellar introductions in recent memory over the last year or so. Latest release ‘Caught In a Twilight Zone’ is a more serious track that is steeped in a very real sense of gravity and sense of unease.

“Last summer, I woke up in a park not knowing where I was. The hospital diagnosed me with a concussion and retrograde amnesia.” Phil says of the track. “I’m not quite the same and I still don’t know what happened. This song is about the parallels between hitting my brain against the ground and living through the dumpster fire that was 2020.”

As a result, the track takes on a less carefree and spacious tone than the majority of his other work, with anxiety seeping in as it progresses. ‘Caught In a Twilight Zone’ does a nice job of expanding Elephant Castle’s sound and showing some more the murkier and more intense depths that it can go to. Often championed as one of our favourite new projects, Elephant Castle continues to surprise us and keep us waiting intently for more creative and thought-provoking sounds.
