Having premiered the video for latest Express Office Portico single ‘Cosmic Joke’ last month, we figured that we would dive back into the track and take a closer look.

Express Office Portico were formed via musician advert’s online, making the most of working from home and gaining members during the pandemic. The outfit, named after from the entrance to an old newspaper distribution office in the city centre of Nottingham, have since released four singles that have begun to establish their unique brand of synth-laden alternative indie pop.

The fourth and latest of these releases is the aforementioned ‘Cosmic Joke’, a track that drips with retro-funk appeal that feels effortlessly unique when melded with Tara Freeman’s distinctive vocals. The chords were discovered by chance by trying and failing to work out how to play to the 70s classic “I’d Rather Be with You” by Bootsy Colins, but the result has created something that feels resolutely their own thanks to the immersive flavour of the outfit and meld of influences that inform their sound. The track does a really great job of continuing to establish the outside of the box approach of the outfit, and the chance elements that they will throw into their cocktail of sound in the pursuit of finding fun, creative sounds.
