Following on from a plethora of emotionally draining and heartbroken releases, Flower Face‘s Ruby McKinnon faces up to the realities about herself in self-effacing and brutally honest fashion, cathartically ripping the band-aid off the emotional wounds that she has been writing songs about and marking something of a departure from her recent releases as a result.
Stylistically, the track has this playful indie pop appeal that feels light and breezy thanks to its stripped-back fashion and charming allure, but the lyrical juxtaposition to this makes for some really interesting and thought-provoking moments. The track is Ruby’s way of owning up to some of her shortcomings and facing them head on, fully aware of her imperfections and unafraid to face that head on deal with the consequences of them.
Ruby elaborates: “It’s very tongue-in-cheek. I wrote it as this upbeat little indie pop song that contrasts the uncomfortable honesty of the lyrics. Like how sometimes you have to laugh so you don’t scream and cry. It’s me admitting a lot of unpleasant truths about myself, laying it all out on the table and saying yeah, I suck in a lot of ways, but I can acknowledge and accept that, which is not the case for a lot of people.”
