The young singer-songwriter is at her captivating best on the new single.
Grace Davies is an artist who seems to have a natural flair for taking personal experiences and feelings and carving them into widely relatable pieces of music. ‘Amsterdam’ is a track that feels so personal and heart-wrenching to the artist, but resonates on such a level also. We’ve all had an ‘Amsterdam’ who we are wary and watchful of, it’s just that Grace probably puts some of our own thoughts into words in a more succinct and poetic way than we could hope to.
Musically the track is effortlessly rousing, and builds around Grace’s soft yet powerful voice. The composer, pianist and singer has full autonomy over her production and sound and this is evident in the way that everything seems to fit together seamlessly. If a heartbroken pop ballad is what you’re looking for today, then ‘Amsterdam’ is most likely your best bet.
“Amsterdam is my Jolene,” says Grace. ‘It’s incredibly honest. It’s about being so frickin’ in love that it hurts, and you don’t trust that something won’t go wrong. Amsterdam touches on jealousy within a relationship and normalises it. Not an unhealthy jealousy, but one that we all feel from time to time, and should allow ourselves to feel – without thinking that we’re ‘crazy’! Of course we may get jealous that the person we love most in the entire world is doing things without us, and of course the thought crosses our minds that we may possibly lose that person to someone else (or somewhere else). We’re human, and I think it’s a beautiful thing.”
