The track was born from lockdown…
Aphex Twin-approved artist Hockeysmith returns with the rich hyper-pop sound of ‘Hyper Kobra’. Like many a 2020 artist, this latest cut was born from the isolation of lockdown.
Originally the moody indie project of sisters Annabel and Georgie Hockeysmith, the now largely-solo venture of Annabel has developed into a more buoyant and experimental pop sound not dissimilar to the ilk of label PC Music. Underpinned by playfully rippling beats and rick synths, the restless rhythms of ‘Hyper Kobra’ are gleefully reminiscent of 90s club music.
“The lyrics are fresh about my feelings during confinement,” explains Hockeysmith of the new single. “I was inspired by people like the writer Ali Smith: it’s current – it’s political – the virus is a poignant theme at the heart of the song.
“Cobras are thought to be one of the deadliest and the most magical members of the snake family,” Annabel continues. “They represent many things besides danger, venom, death and malice: cobras are also seen as graceful, elegant and fast. The cobra sways in response to the movement and music of the charmer, who knows how to avoid the relatively slow strike.”
“There are so many vocal gimmicks in this song – and they only happen once,” adds producer Borussia on the transformative nature of the track’s vocal style. “The musical references include 90s eurodance hits, as well as Usher & Alicia Keys’ R&B gem ‘My Boo’, with breathy vocal nods to Cocteau Twins’ Elizabeth Fraser”.
‘Hyper Kobra’ is available now via EEL.
