Kaio Mars‘ debut single ‘All I Need’ is a dreamy, nostalgic and sweet introduction. The moniker is the solo venture of Aidin Sadeghi of American Pets, who themselves are the side project of Young the Giant.
Unerringly bright with its carefree strums of guitar and breezy melody, ‘All I Need’ actually takes inspiration from a highly personal perspective. Born in Germany to Iranian parents who fled the revolution of their homeland, Mars’ prerogative is to shine a light on the immigrant and refugee experience with the song.
Highly poignant in 2020 when populations are displaced through unrest, war and the COVID-19 pandemic, the track leans into the appreciation for safety and the mundane of which many are accustomed and take for granted. Written at a time where Mars had a lot of frustration with the process of writing music, ‘All I Need’ is “a reminder of what draws people to music in the first place, and to embrace our individual experiences for the unique treasures that they are rather than trying to conform to some imaginary standard purported by a white-dominated industry”.
