Canadian pop star Mike Ruby is an artist that seems to have mastered the art of juxtaposing sunny, fun melodies with more bittersweet, blunt lyrics. Musically, latest single ‘Don’t Want You Back (wtf)’ is all sunshine and rainbows, but the light is found not from the relationship, but rather the acknowledgment that this person doesn’t deserve you.
The lyrics are blunt and cutting and have a relatable edge to them which makes the track as endearing and engrossing as it is fun. Summer feels like it may have been postponed in 2020, but this track would have definitely been one of the soundtracks of a more memorable one.
