British based artist MARNEY turns into Superwoman in the powerful music video for ‘California’

Forget about Superman, MARNEY turns into Superwoman in the impressive visuals for new single, ‘California‘.

Released at the beginning of March, ‘California’ is not only a visionary musically, but the visuals glisten with an eye-catching persona.

Walking through the streets with her head held high, MARNEY’s distinctive visuals are powerfully engaging and leave you sticking them on repeat.

Sharing her thoughts on the visuals, MARNEY mentions, “from the point of ‘California’ existing as a demo, I knew the video would need to be a Superman with an ill-fitting suit walking down Hollywood Boulevard. My forever favourite band and forever heroes are My Chemical Romance; loving them lead me to things like Watchmen, Supergods by Grant Morrison and The Umbrella Academy in my teenage years, so the symbolism of the supers and the sadness of washed up, faded superheroes has been with me for a while.

I love that Superman feels eternal, anyone can be him – so long as they have the outfit. Grant Morrison writes about the idea that Superman, like God, is an all loving and powerful creature that we made up, and the beauty of creating a character that is there to protect humanity, and defend it from all evils. “Superman is just this perfect human pop-culture distillation of a really basic idea”, the same idea that God is. Superman is biblical.

We filmed the video on the stretch outside Mann’s Chinese Theatre which is name checked in the song. I made the video with my co-writer and the song’s co-producer, Adam Argyle. It was terrifying taking an expensive hired camera down to Hollywood Boulevard at 2am, I didn’t know how sketchy it got down there; we had tried to film at dusk but one of the street performers was holding a Britney-at-the-VMAs style python and I had to get out of there due to my life long and paralysing fear of snakes. We also hadn’t anticipated how many kids were gonna want to stop and have a photo taken with Superman.

I got teary when we first got down there, and I realised what a complete journey the song had been on and a sense of pride thinking, ‘If my 14 year old self could see me now, she’d be proud that I rode this one out’. I still want to be Gerard Way when I grow up, but I’ll settle for Superman as second best.”

Could we be watching and listening to the next Superhero musician to win over our hearts? We think so.

California is out now via all major platforms, with the music video to be released tomorrow.

Be transported into the world of MARNEY, her music is exceptional.
