US & Germany based producer, songwriter and vocalist Natalie returns with the striking new single ‘Torment’
Opening with a bouncing bass guitar line and a pulsing four to the floor ‘Torment’ wastes no time introducing Natalie’s smokey, breathy lead vocal.
Setting a sultry, dark-pop tone akin to Billie Eilish, the track quickly builds towards its chorus, ebbing and flowing as crunching top ends are introduced in the beat and subtle, airy synths float in and out.
The track peaks in its earworm chorus as Natalie’s vocals are underpinned by a swelling vocoder, adding to the early FKA Twigs-esque nature of the production and allowing Natalie’s emotive vocals to shine.
Atmospheric and intoxicating, the soundscape is both musically intriguing and effortlessly commercial, delivering inventive yet simplistic ideas to great effect.
Lyrically, ‘Torment’ talks about the trials and tribulations of a toxic relationship. Speaking about how the track was made, Natalie shares: “I started by creating the bassline, it inspired me immediately.
It felt haunting yet playful and I knew I wanted to match that energy lyrically. My favorite songs are the ones that can transition you from your bedroom to a night out.”
