Dark pop outfit PETSEMATARY are back with new single ‘Heady’

Out worldwide tomorrow, this track is one of the most exciting releases of the week. ‘Heady’ is the new release from London/Oxford based outfit PETSEMATARY, and is about being proud of who you are.

Signed to Beth Shalom Records, the new release is a middle finger up to people who cling to old ideas of patriarchy and gender.

Gaby-Elise of the band explains that, “Heady is essentially screaming into the void that your gender and sexuality is your own and no one elses, and how while it can sometimes feel disillusioning and exhausting, its ultimately empowering. I went to a really Catholic school where there was a lot of shame and guilt associated with sexuality and women in general, and this kind of ingrained misogyny is something that you really have to take an active part in unlearning.

I thought a lot about biblical characters like Eve and Salome and how they are condemned. They are basically symbols of this ancient misogyny because they transgress beyond the bounds of whats socially acceptable, and this idea hasn’t gone away. People will still judge you on how you express your sexuality, where you come from, what your body count is etc, so this song is about reclaiming those patriarchal stereotypes, being unapologetic, and also being hopeful that every time you do this, you are manifesting change.”

Entering with a powerful drum sequence, the track features colourful guitar melodies that drone with large amounts of reverb and delay.

It’s Gaby-Elise’s mesmerising vocals that brings the track together. Pieced together with perfection, the drop of ‘Heady’ makes us feel like Christmas has come early.
