Enigmatic singer-songwriter Qwerty Mick triumphs with his debut EP ‘If You Lived Here You’d Be Home By Now’
Qwerty Mick is an Irish singer-songwriter whose music is as intriguing as his name. The multi-instrumentalist began songwriting in admiration of artists like King Krule, Elliott Smith and Alex G, sharing similar downtempo DNA to such contemporaries.
His recent single ‘Google Your Symptoms’ received online praise and national airplay, the first taste of his upcoming debut EP ‘If You Lived Here You’d Be Home By Now’.
The six-track EP is a triumph, with the track Graffiti Literature being a particular stand-out moment. The lush textures of Qwerty Mick’s production create a wonderfully dreamy, escapist atmosphere – allowing his charming vocals to float above the haze.
It’s a mixed bag of lo-fi bedroom-built music filled with jazzy chord progressions and lo-fi punky drums, drenched in the singer’s own wry outlook and devil-may-care attitude.
For Qwerty Mick, the recording process is one of nocturnal, introspective solitude. He embraces a DIY philosophy and, from his small bedroom studio, crafts productions that are delicately sparse yet wholly ambitious.
This enigmatic artist has thoroughly impressed with his debut EP and we are eager to see what is in store for this thrilling new voice.
The artist says of his new release, “The EP name came from an old advertising campaign that consisted of these huge billboards that all said ‘If You Lived Here You’d Be Home by Now’, in an attempt to sell expensive houses to people while they were on their long commute home from work.
When I was writing the EP, I was commuting 3+ hours a day in total to and from college and it was a large chunk of your day to be spending fully mindless. The name also worked as a metaphor for learning to be content with where one is currently at in their life.
Though much of the EP is about a frustration with the state Ireland’s in, it’s also just as much about a personal frustration within, and learning to feel at home with where you’re at at all times.”
