Milton Keynes based songwriter Sam Wray started his musical life off competing internationally as a street dancer, but quickly fell in love with making music. Picking up a guitar at age 12, that guitar feels historical now and a big part of Sam’s career change.

Being exposed to street dance music such as hip-hop as well as classic soul and rock, Sam’s influences come from all over the place. Making him versatile and providing the soundtrack to your afternoon, ‘Why’ is his latest offering, and it’s fuelled with good vibes.

On the release, Sam told us, “Sometimes a whole song will come me in one go just like this. I was exploring fiction writing at the time and really liked the idea of making a song that told a simple story like early folk songs did. I wrote about the arc of a house party which is like a short story in itself; from that time at the start of a night where you’re quite happy to sit quietly alone and drink, to later on where you’re chatting in alley-ways and meeting new people.

This was my most popular live song in the pre-lockdown era and so I was really keen to produce it and get it out. My favourite line has to be “you told me ’bout a painting on your grandparent’s wall, I wasn’t bothered at all…” it’s nice and sarky.”

Tom Misch meets Rex Orange County vibes, Sam Wray’s ‘Why’ blends that euphoric feeling of parties, but at the same time fuses the slight anxiety you may feel too. An iconic single that needs to be played loudly, it’s exactly what the world needs right now.

A little pick me up to illuminate that no matter what you’re going through, things will get easier. Vibrant and featuring a sensational arrangement, don’t question why, just listen.
