The track is from the Toronto duo’s upcoming new EP of the same name
Moody aesthetics and brooding, introspective lyrics are things that have grown synonymous with Toronto dream pop duo Soft Set over the last few years, with their thoughtful and intricate sound often navigating themes that are shrouded in darkness.
Their upcoming new EP Gone is a release that the band say is a much lighter and upbeat affair, and its title-track and latest single is a really rousing and thoughtful showcase of that. There is still the kind of haunting and dreamy quality to the sound and vocals that the duo have grown beloved for, but the layered harmonies and lush tones of the instrumental make for a sound and style that feels altogether more optimistic and jovial, signalling something of an evolution in their sound and a broadening of their sonic horizons. ‘Gone’, the single has a lot of really thoughtful and immersive moments that feel as catchy and rousing as they are atmospheric, and the release serves as a great taster for what is to come on the EP as a whole.
“The one thing that really surprised us while making the Gone EP was how much lighter and more hopeful it ended up being,” says Soft Set’s Nathan Athay. “It started off really dark during the demo phase, but once we began layering in harmonies, it took on a more uplifting vibe, which we weren’t expecting. It was a nice surprise for us, and it made the entire process more interesting, for sure!”
