The track sees the emerging artist continue to showcase his versatility
Northern artist Sweets and his genre skipping sound seem to be really coming to their own as of late, with his rap-laced take on synth-laden alternative pop showcasing a creative, hungry artist with a real chip on his shoulder.
Following on from the explosive and volatile ‘I’m Not Coming Home’, the artist has taken a left turn into the melodic and more carefree ‘Yellow’, A track that showcases a completely different side from the artist, the flows and rapping still feel as concise and focused as ever, but the chorus in particular provides an unexpected kind of levity, creating a kind of Streets-esque anthem of nights out and regrets. The result is further proof that whether going for searing brutality or more alt-pop-focused melodies, Sweets has a finger on the pulse of his sound and can push and pull and manipulate it to suit his mood.
“‘Yellow’ is about the differing emotions between the night before and the morning after a big night.” Sweets says. “Being in your mate’s car doesn’t quite bring the good feelings and excitement it did the night before. I tried to capture that with the trippy flashback in the third verse.”
