Over the last decade, The Technicolours have been honing their unique brand of alternative rock, unfazed by the limitations and conventions of genre, and this seems to have culminated with the release of Cinema Sublimina. The album is a smorgasbord of genre and ideas, with a sonic tapestry that varies from experimental dance-funk to more the more raucous and frenetic.

Somewhere in between sits the outfit’s latest single ‘Howl’, that feels almost like a post-grunge at times with its moody riffs and powerful vocals. It grows and grows as the track progresses and finds itself latching onto your head with its swirling melodies and memorable hooks. Cinema Sublimina is a body of work that operates more like a concept album than just a collection of tracks, making for experiences that feel engaging on an individual level but come together to create a body of work that feels defining and monumental for the outfit.

Cinema Sublimina is a blurry collage of all the moments in life that feel ‘rigged.’” Brennan Smiley of The Technicolors says of the track. “We never intended to make any kind of concept record but we most definitely ended up with a story arc that, to me, sort of reflects the way things feel when you walk out of a movie theater or a play… as if you just witnessed another dimension flash before your eyes. Also the idea of a ‘concept record’ is sort of funny because growing up I’d mostly see it within progressive rock bands or Rush or something. I think once we realized there was a flow and a common theme happening we sort of leaned into it, maybe because it feels like the way people consume music nowadays is much more single-based.”
