The track follows on from the success of her debut EP Never Too Far from a Dark Thought
From the second that the bouncy bedroom-pop synths of ‘Equal’ hit you, you can tell that you’re about to hear something special. The latest release from rapidly emerging UK artist packs as much of a sonic punch as it does a hart-hitting societal one, as the artist tackles themes such as feeling inferior and having to conform to societal standards, against an admittedly unique dark pop backdrop.
The track, in an ironic way, showcases the artist’s subconscious desires to fit in while showcasing everything about her differences that makes her stand out and feel vital and exciting. Her sound feels truly distinctive and unique to herself, and this provides her with something much more interesting and exciting than following the norm ever would. Amber continues to establish herself as a creative force with every release and shows no sign of slowing down.
“‘Equal’ is about feeling inferior because of who you are but being frustrated at the fact, you know you only think that through consuming societal norms your entire life.” explains Amber Jay. “This then affects your opinion of yourself, which I think is so sad and one of humankind’s biggest failings. Within this shared frustration across so many minorities is power. ‘Equal’ also encompasses a feeling of unity and hope that between us we can at least find power within each other.”
