The track is the artist’s first release since her acclaimed 2021 EP Fool Me With Flattery
Just 20-years-old, Molly Burman is an artist who has already carved out a place for herself in the UK music scene with an already extensive and impressive catalogue of tracks that showcase both the fun and thoughtful aspects of her alt-pop sound.
The latest of which is ‘Pretty Girl’ a track that falls onto the more introspective and thoughtful side of things. On the stripped-back new release, the artist young wrestles with the challenges of living up to the standards that women are expected to in modern society. Musically, the melancholy, piano-led nature of the track and her effortlessly affecting vocals and melodies make for a rousing and often inspiring listening experience that continues to single the artist out as a unique and exciting talent.
Navigating the world chasing a patriarchal ideal is tiring, but on this single, Molly discovers that feeling pretty actually begins on the inside: “I wrote ‘pretty girl’ a few years ago desperately trying to become what I thought was ‘perfect’. I wanted to be the girls that I heard being spoken about in songs and books, so I would dress myself in things that made me feel uncomfortable and would spend hours looking in the mirror imagining my body to look a different way, but that just made me feel further and further away from the ‘pretty girls’,” she says.
“Over time I started to realise that I could only truly be pretty when I felt it; when I was doing things that I loved, wearing colourful clothes and not trying to be someone else. This song is about being completely yourself and feeling absolutely beautiful while doing it.”
