We had a chat with KOKO about their uniquely dark electronic sound and their journey the trio have been on to get to now
From their early releases of tracks like ‘Freak’ and ‘Eyes So Wide’ a few years back, to new tunes like ‘Better Without You’ and new single ‘Bittersweet’, we have been on the KOKO bandwagon for some time here at CLOUT, and their distinctive brand of dark electronic pop has allowed them to continue to innovate and expand their sound as time has progressed.
The outfit are currently gearing up to release their new EP In Your House Music and their latest releases have showcased that the outfit still have the guile and exciting cutting edge that they have built their name on. This is an exciting time for KOKO, and with their interesting soundscapes, effortlessly cool charisma, and daring, ever expanding style and cutting edge, we could be on the verge of a new peak for the trio. Following their excellent latest singles, the aforementioned ‘Better Without You’ and ‘Bittersweet’, and with eyes on the near future, we had a chat with KOKO and found out a bit more about the trio behind the music.
Who TF are KOKO?
We’re a three piece electronic dark dance band, that met on the 12th floor of some mental house party in Bristol.
How long have you been making music?
About 3 years and actually started off very indie and then the more we created and experimented, we found our sound and it almost became effortless
Why do you make music?
It’s who we are… generic, I know but we wanna make music to make people have a good time! We always have a laugh in whatever we do and where we are so we wanna bring our energy and vibe into your ears and make you feel the way we do even if it’s only for 2.30 mins
What are your biggest influences?
Partying and having a laugh, real life experiences, dancing, love, lots of beers (we drink a lot while in the studio 😂 so a lot of our ideas come from this)
What would you say has been your best moment so far?
Our track ‘Silly With It’ was on Dirt 5 Xbox and PlayStation game… that was pretty cool I guess?
How would you describe your sound to somebody unfamiliar with it?
We make Dark moody electronic and dance music. Also sometimes we make ballads…
What’s your dream “I’ve made it” moment?
The moment we come off stages after headlining reading, the lights go out and we hear screams, drinks in the air and ringing ears as everyones going out there minds… That is when we’ve made it!
We love your new single ‘Bittersweet’, what more can you tell us about it?
This is about the early stages of dating someone. The ‘getting to know someone stage’. We have all tried to convince ourselves that we’ve found ‘the one’ and that turns out not to be the case. We have all lied to ourselves in an effort to commit to something that wasn’t right. In a relationship like that, the emotional state is volatile with massive highs and dreadful lows… it’s a scenario you need to get out of, but it’s usually bittersweet.
What else do you have planned for the near future?
We are heading out to berlin this month to plan! But finally we can get back to gigging and gigging and gigging and gigging!
And finally, who is your biggest fan right now?
Our family and our team have always been our biggest fans, we’ve only ever worked with people that “get it”
