Synth-pop outfit Common Deer are no strangers to addressing difficult themes such as mental health, abuse and obsession, and latest their latest release ‘Negative Thot’ is a perplexing showcase of how dark yet alarmingly catchy their unique sound can be.
The track’s playful synths and instrumentation belie its darker underbelly, just as well as an impossibly catchy chorus hook that features the lyrics “I’m not myself, I’m kind of fucked up inside”. It’s an ambitious juxtaposition that reiterates these themes of lacking control over your actions and behaviours that the track alludes to. ‘Negative Thot’ is a track that succeeds both as a thoughtful exploration of mental health issues and on the surface level, serving as a really enjoyable rock-edged piece of synth-pop.
