Having released a raft of well-received and immersive releases over the last few years, Canadian artist Gen has finally released her stunning debut EP Fallen Angel, a rousing and engrossing body of work that showcases the powerful allure of the artist’s distinctive style, as evidenced by the two tracks that close out the EP.

Its fourth track ‘Angels Up Above’ sees the artist in her most vulnerable and arresting territory to date. Looking towards the titular angels and looking for some sort of sign that they are they are she struggles with feelings of loneliness and depression. The melancholy nature of the piano here and the artist’s stunning harmonies really bring the gravity and weight of the situation to life, as her confessional lyrics paint a vivid picture of her plight.

‘Not Coming Back’ is the final release on the EP and serves as an memorable outro that sticks to your skin throughout. The down pitched vocals and moody aesthetic feel haunting and captivating throughout, building a sense of atmospheric tension that feels ambiguous while also strikingly powerful. The track is a fitting end to a release that is packed full of anger, despair and tragedy, and provides the artist with one last chance to leave a lasting impression.
