Alone’ storms through themes of love, loss and loneliness with a strong head on it’s shoulders. Fonder’s debut track is a self-empowering folk number combining harmonies of vocalists, and founding members, Claudia Whittle and Emily Taylor. Formed in Birmingham back in 2019, the folk-rock quintet use acoustic and electric elements within their songwriting and live performances.

Drawing influence from the likes of Kodaline, Vance Joy and The Lumineers, the refreshing contemporary sound feels reassuring and needed in today’s current climate. Recorded and produced by Jack Trubshaw (BIMM Birmingham Alumni), ‘Alone’ drops on all major streaming platforms tomorrow.

On their debut, Fonder told us, “When we first started writing ‘Alone’, it was about a hypothetical relationship. However the more we wrote, the more autobiographical it became. Almost everyone has been in a relationship where the other person wants something that you just can’t give.

Whether it’s that they want you to be someone you’re not, or maybe they want too much of your time and you’re starting to lose who you are outside of that. Either way, you come to a point where you realise you’re better off alone. And as sad and heartbreaking as it is, it’s also empowering to be able to put yourself first and find the strength to walk away. This song encompasses all of that. But also, we want everyone who listens to it to connect it with their own story, their own moment of self love.”

Currently working on their debut EP, the stunning sound of Fonder needs to be shouted from the rooftops. Nudging towards country slightly in their songwriting, ‘Alone’ will remind you of the purity that lies within music.

Sometimes modern chart tracks lack the intimacy and honesty, but then you find bands such as Fonder that heal all wounds. A beautiful debut single that’s filled with individuality and empathy.
