UpClose with Sophie Griffiths

We had a lovely chat with hotly-tipped Essex singer-songwriter Sophie Griffiths

Sophie Griffiths is a name that has been rising in prominence in the UK scene as of late, earning plaudits and fans with her affecting and soulful brand of indie pop. Boasting a timeless sound interspersed with cutting edge, modern sensibilities and a plethora of charisma and personality, Sophie looks destined for increasingly bigger stages and platforms as she continues to establish herself and reach the ears and hearts of more people.

With our friends at CloseUp, we had a chat with the exciting artist and found out some more about her journey, her musical process, and her gorgeous new single ‘Evergreen’.

Sophie! It’s great to have a chat. We love your music as you well know. Tell us a bit more about the world of yourself?

Thanks so much for having me on! I’m a singer-songwriter from Essex, making soulful pop tunezzz 🙂

What part of the musical process do you enjoy most, and why? is it performing live, creating your tracks, or..?

That’s a tough one. It’s definitely a toss up between writing sessions and performing live. I love collaborating with other songwriters and musicians; getting that different perspective and flavour from other writers has helped me grow so much in the last year. Equally, live music is probably what feeds my soul the most. My parents are big music lovers and took me to a lot of gigs and festivals growing up, so that’s how I fell in love with music. There’s no better feeling than performing live.

The last couple of years and the pandemic have been crazy for musicians, how much has it had an affect on your music?

It definitely was a mad time, however I feel super lucky to have been at home hibernating in my studio. It allowed me to focus on the social media side of being an artist, and connecting with people online. That’s how my TikTok page started growing. The prospect of reaching millions of people on the For You Page was too much of an opportunity for a lil independent artist like me to pass up. It’s changed my life over the past year, so I’m actually quite grateful for that time in a way.

If you could create a ‘SOPHIE GRIFFITHS FEST’, which 3 artists would you have headlining? (Fri, Sat, Sun) p.s, can we come?

OF COURSE!

My Friday headliner would be Adele; I was fully that 10 year old with her album ’19’ on repeat – as if I’d experienced heart break at that age ahah! My Saturday headliner’s gotta be Anne Marie. I saw her live back in 2018 and she’s one of those artists that’s just amazing live. Finally, the Sunday headline is Stevie Wonder all day long. I was lucky enough to see him at British Summer Time at Hyde Park a couple years ago. I could have cried. Also, I know this is cheating because you asked for 3, but I would also die to have YEBBA on the line-up, she’s just INSANE!

Your new single ‘Evergreen’ is out NOW. What’s the inspiration/meaning behind it, and why did you want to put this out now going into Summer?

This track is all about when a mate ditches you for their first love; going from being inseparable childhood friends to coming a sad second to their relationship. This was written from personal experience and I wanted to show all sides of the way I was feeling: happy that my friend was happy, but also pretty upset that the friend I thought was my ‘evergreen’ could drop me so quickly, while being completely prepared to pick up the pieces if the relationship didn’t work out. This is a track that you could whack on your Summer night car drives playlist and scream your heart out to.
