We had a chat with thoroughly unique New York R&B artist Jovian.

Prolific New York R&B artist Jovian was at his prolific best in 2020, releasing a slew of singles including smash hit ‘Timothée Chalamet’ and his brooding and atmospheric latest release ‘Where’d U Go’. Born with synesthesia, a rare disorder that allows the artist to smell, taste, hear, feel and see colours in his head that he’s never seen before, Jovian’s sound has a similar sense of otherworldiness to it that makes the artist feel distinctively unique and cutting edge.

With this stellar year behind him and a whole host of new tunes in his arenal, we had a chat with Jovian to find out a bit more about the artist and his sounds.

How long have you been making music?

I’ve been making music since 2009, but i didn’t take it serious till 2016. After I graduated from college I promised myself I’d pursue music 100% if I enjoyed to process of making an EP & it’s all I’ve been doing since.

Why do you make music?

I make music as a way to survive. Music brings me the clarity & the closure that other people cannot do for me. Without the ability to create music daily, I may not have been able to survive as long as I have.

What are your biggest influences?

I’d say my number 1 influence is astronomy. The idea that I cannot travel the stars makes me go 10x harder in music because if I cannot have my one, true dream then I’m going to make life here on earth as beautiful as possible to make up for that.

What would you say has been your best moment so far?

Hmmm, truthfully, I’m not remotely proud of myself yet. I haven’t accomplished anything in my eyes so I’ll check back with you once I’m really proud of something.

How would you describe your sound to somebody unfamiliar with it?

I’d say Hip-Hop & Shakespeare are at the foundation of everything I create musically.

What’s your dream ‘i’ve made it’ moment?

To have a platform where I can shift people’s lives/perspectives & make kids feel less lonely than I did growing up with sensations of depression & anxiety. Also being in the studio with Tyler, the Creator, Frank Ocean, & Cudi!

We love your new single ‘Where’d U Go?’, what’s the story behind that?

Thanks so much:)! The story behind that was just the idea of me really digging deep into my traumas & putting all of how I felt & what I found while digging on a track. It was the most vulnerable I have ever been lyrically & even with the vocal delivery.

What was it like meeting Timothée Chalamet?!

We’ve met a few times briefly around the east village area of NYC. I didn’t get to tell him about the song, but I’m confident he will hear it soon!

And finally, who is your biggest fan right now?

Sheeeesh! I have a few, but they know who they are. Just a year ago I couldn’t even say I have fans so it’s so beautiful to get such an influx of love & support from complete strangers. I speak to my fans via DM everyday. I am here to speak & support anyone that supports my work. Always💙
