‘Elderberry’ is a track that was born when poet and musician Simina Banu gifted it to fellow musicians Iola Patalas and Michael Johancsik to play with their acoustic band, The Oops Kitchen. However, having decided that the track was missing something without its creator, the pair opted to instead form a brand new project featuring all three of them, leading to the birth of Mascara Wizard, a Montreal-based folk-pop group with a gorgeously poised and carefree sound.

The track is the debut single from the project, a chilled out and rousing release that builds in a truly authentic feeling and rewarding fashion, melding a stripped-back sound with subtle electronic elements that help bring it to life and give it a truly multi-faceted and rounded charm. There is something effortlessly captivating about the track, from the little sonic nuances to the quietly commanding nature of the vocals and the gentle shifts in tone and feel. This whole experience has happily lead Mascara Wizard down a path of inspiration, and the band’s debut EP Sunbathing In The Valley Of Death, set for release on April 21st and promises to deliver more deeply stirring and engrossing moments from the charismatic collection of artists.

“When I wrote this song, I was really into enigmatic lyrics that could have a variety of interpretations,” says Simina. “I wrote it a long time ago but I think it was mostly led by feelings, wordplay and sounds, and then I tried to arrange them into something cohesive.”
